| Senate Passes CJS Appropriations Bill: Conference with House to Follow |
On October 16, the Senate passed its version of the FY 2008 Commerce, Justice, Science (CJS) appropriations bill that includes Senate recommendations for funding the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Census Bureau, among others. The White House has threatened to veto the legislation.

| Effect of Gender Gap on Elections Examined in New Podcast |
What does research tell us about the gender gap? Do other factors, such as race, religiosity, and opinions about the war in Iraq, interact with gender to affect voting behavior? How might the gender gap affect the 2008 presidential election? These and other questions are addressed in the roundtable, "The Gender Gap in the 2006 and 2008 Elections," the second podcast in the MPSA series.

| Critical Budget Issues Put 2010 Census at Risk |
Plans for conducting some of the activities necessary to prepare for 2010 Census are threatened because the Bureau is operating at its FY 2007 funding level as required in the Continuing Resolution (CR). Louis Kincannon, director of the Census Bureau, outlined options for addressing the budget shortfall at an October 16 hearing held by the House Subcommittee on Information Policy, Census, and National Archives.

| National Research Council Report Recommends Easing Security Restrictions on University Research |
A new report from the National Research Council of the National Academies recommends that security restrictions imposed on university research by the government since 2001 should be eased in order to enhance the nation's economic and strategic competitiveness.

| MacArthur Foundation Launches Law and Neuroscience Project |
The MacArthur Foundation has committed $10 million for the project, co-directed by Michael Gazzaniga, head of the Sage Center for the Study of the Mind at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and Walter Sinnott-Armstrong, professor of philosophy and legal studies at Dartmouth College.
