| R & D Expenditures for Political Science Dropped 2.2% in FY 2006, Study Finds |
Data from the NSF Survey of Research and Development Expenditures at Universities and Colleges indicate that FY 2006 total expenditures for the social sciences grew by 1.1%, but expenditures for political science dropped by 2.2%. While federally funded academic research and development expenditures increased by 2.9% from FY 2005 to FY 2006, when adjusted for inflation, expenditures declined 0.1%.

| Study Finds Universities Can Promote Political Participation in Neutral Ways |
Educating for Democracy, a new book from Jossey-Bass, reports on a Carnegie Foundation study of 21 college and university courses and programs that address students’ preparation for democratic participation. The study found that the courses and programs resulted in political learning and that increased political learning does not change party identification or political ideology, contrary to popular opinion. Students with little initial interest in political issues made especially substantial learning gains.

| Higher Education Act Renewal Emerges from House Committee |
On November 15, the House Education and Labor Committee, chaired by Rep. George Miller (D-CA), reported out its version of the bill, H.R. 4137, which reauthorizes the Javits Graduate Fellowship program, the Thurgood Marshall Legal Educational Opportunity program, and the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education.

| UM Website Will Track Grievances Against Professors |
Students at the University of Missouri's four campuses soon will be able to lodge complaints on university websites about professors who they think have discriminated against them based on their viewpoints.
