| House Passes Bill to Preserve Electronic Messages |
The bill, sponsored by Reps. Henry Waxman (D-CA), Lacy Clay (D-MO), and Paul Hodes (D-NH), modernizes the requirements of the Presidential Records Act to help preserve e-mail messages and other electronic messages for historical research. In the Senate the bill has been referred to the Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs, chaired by Sen. Joseph Lieberman (I-CT).

| Study Finds Hiring Academic Couples on the Rise |
While the percentage of faculty members who are couples has increased 10% over the last 30 years, a study by the Clayman Institute for Gender Research at Standford University indicates that most faculty members do not know if their institution has a written hiring and retention policy for faculty members who are hired as couples. The report recommends that universities develop policies and guidelines.

| Census 2010 Director Expresses Concern about Impact of Immigrants' Fears on 2010 Count |
In an address to the Rural Sociology Society meeting, U.S. Census Bureau Director Steve Murdock said the constitutional mandate to count all people residing in the U.S., not just citizens, could present significant difficulties in completing the 2010 count.

| NSF Report: Continued Decline in R&D Funding in FY 2007 |
Federal funding failed to outpace inflation for the second year in a row, according to the NSF Science Resources Statistics Division, the first two-year decline in the 35 years for which data have been gathered. At the same time, the Federal Government remains the largest source of academic R&D funding.
