Travel Insurance & Refunds

If a meeting is cancelled, few airlines or travel agencies will provide a refund unless event cancellation insurance was purchased when the tickets were purchased. If an employer forbids travel, that does not imply that the airline will provide a refund. Fear of travel is not considered a reason to provide a refund. However because of downturns in the travel industry, some airlines are encouraging people to purchase tickets by providing additional flexibility, but this is only for new purchases.  You will need to check with your travel agent or the airline for a specific answer.

With COVID-19 Coronavirus, Should You Cancel Or Postpone Air Travel?

Safe Travel

According to the CDC, because of how air circulates and is filtered, most viruses and other germs do not spread easily on airplanes. Air travel is very safe, as is travel to most of the world, although some  areas of the world are unsafe to visit due to the risk of COVID (see map). The CDC recommends that those at a higher risk of getting very sick from this illness (older adults and people with serious chronic medical conditions including heart disease, diabetes and lung disease) should avoid travel. Those traveling should take precautions to protect themselves, including: avoiding contact with sick individuals and washing hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or using hand sanitizer that contains 60%–95% alcohol.
